AI yearbook photos: portrait on a mottled blue school-photography backdrop
Before you pick one

The backdrops everyone remembers

School photography had four or five setups and used them on everybody, everywhere, for about thirty years. The mottled blue cloth. The flat neutral grey. The warm beige used for graduation portraits. The library shelf, thrown slightly out of focus. None of them were chosen by the person in the picture, which is exactly why they are recognisable: a mottled blue backdrop does not read as a photograph, it reads as a year.

That is the whole appeal of the format, and it is why it goes wrong when it is treated as a filter. A yearbook photo is not a colour grade on a selfie; it is a specific studio setup — one soft key light slightly above the eyes, a plain cloth ground, a seated three-quarter pose, and a camera at head height. Those are the settings the yearbook category draws from, which is why the results look posed in the same slightly stiff way the originals did.

Forty, so the whole group chat gets one

Nobody wants one yearbook photo. The format is social: the point is a set, posted together, in the four backdrops, with the small differences between them doing the joke. One picture on its own just looks like a bad portrait.

So it is forty, from the same three references, in one order. The grounds rotate, the crops rotate — tight, chest-up, and a wider one with space to the side — and the light shifts from flat and even to slightly more directional across the set, the way a real school photographer's afternoon did.

Nothing is trained on your face

The apps that made this format popular in 2023 mostly worked by fitting a small model to a dozen of your photographs and then generating from it. That is where the wait came from, and it is why a lot of people who tried them once looked for the delete button afterwards.

This does not do that. Your three references are read at the moment each picture is made and nothing is fitted, so there is no model of your face on a server when it finishes, and it finishes in about ten minutes. The references themselves are deleted within thirty days automatically, or immediately if you press the button on your own page.

Two limits worth saying before you pay. This is for adults — eighteen and over, no exceptions — and it does not produce an official school photograph or anything a school will accept for its own records. It makes pictures that look like one.

Three, not the whole forty

Three backdrops, large enough to judge.

The blue cloth, the neutral grey and the library — shown big, because the thing that makes a yearbook photo convincing is not the backdrop but the light on the face in front of it, and that is only visible at size. Your order includes 40 photos.

From your phone, as they already are. The model reads your face from the references and does not train on them, so there is no run to wait through.

What people ask before posting these

Is this an official school photo?
No. It produces pictures in the style of one. It does not guarantee compliance with any school's submission rules and it does not supply official identification photographs.
Can I use it for a child's photo?
No. Adults only, eighteen and over — you upload photographs of yourself, and the acceptable-use page says the same thing in more words.
Do the backdrops actually look like the old ones?
Judge that from the three above rather than from this sentence. They are made by the product, at the size that shows the light on the face, which is the part that decides it.
What happens to my photos?
They go to the model that makes the portraits and nowhere else. Nothing is trained on them, by us or by the provider, and there is a button that deletes them immediately.
